The sensitive electronics in any underground automatic system can fail over time. Valves and hoses, often made of lightweight plastic, can crack or break.

Good news: repairing your irrigation system is relatively simple and inexpensive. Replacement parts, such as hoses, elbows, and valves, usually cost only a few dollars and can be replaced individually without digging up the entire system.

1. Clean the Sprinkler Heads

Sprinkler heads can quickly become clogged with dirt and debris, affecting water distribution and causing dry or brown spots. Regular cleaning ensures smooth system operation.

2. Replace the Valves

If sprinklers are not popping up, not turning on, or have low water pressure, the issue may be with the valves. Replacement may require cutting plastic pipes, depending on the system.

3. Repair a Faulty Valve by Replacing the Solenoid

The solenoid acts like a small “door” inside the valve that opens and closes in milliseconds. Replacing it is quick and easy, usually taking about 5 minutes.

4. Winterize Your System

Drain all water and store above-ground components in a dry, warm place to prevent frost damage.

5. Locate Leaks

Check for wet spots or taller, greener grass – these could indicate a leak.

6. Repair Damaged Wires

Damaged wires disrupt communication between valves and the controller. Repair or replace them to restore proper system function.

7. Don’t Ignore Disconnected Wires

Disconnected wires can also cause system failures. Identify the cause and reconnect immediately.

8. Repair Leaking Pipes

If an underground pipe is leaking, carefully dig up the damaged section and replace it. Flexible pipes make repairs easier.
