Brick Pattern

Laying tiles in a brick pattern is probably the simplest option. In this layout, each row of tiles is usually offset by half the width of a tile, creating long horizontal lines that visually expand the space. This timeless design works with almost any rectangular tile, making it suitable for nearly any room.

The brick pattern looks especially stylish when the grout contrasts with the tiles. For example, dark gray grout paired with white tiles emphasizes the geometric design. This pattern can be used almost anywhere but works best in rooms with a single type of simple tile. Quality installation ensures precise and even grout lines, adding elegance to the overall design.

Vertical Brick

The same principle as above, but tiles are placed vertically rather than horizontally. This makes the room appear taller than it actually is and adds a subtle, unexpected, yet classic visual effect.

When you want to visually increase the ceiling height in a small space, such as a compact bathroom.

Large Tiles

This layout is similar to the first, but the final effect can differ greatly, especially with rich stone patterns. Large tiles minimize the visual impact of grout and create a smooth, uninterrupted surface.

Stacked

Mosaic

Although the word “mosaic” might bring complex patterns and images to mind, in design it simply refers to small tiles arranged in a repeating pattern, often mounted on a mesh for easier installation. The most common type is 2.5 × 2.5 cm squares, but the market offers endless shapes and patterns.

Mosaics are usually installed on part of a wall only, since they have many grout lines that need filling. They require more careful maintenance, especially in wet areas. High-quality installation is essential to ensure proper grouting and minimize the risk of mold.

Mosaics create a rich yet subtle multi-tone effect, just as appealing as luxury stone but much more affordable. They are also used on shower floors, where additional grout makes the surface less slippery.

Install mosaics where you want to draw more attention, such as shower walls or niches.

Herringbone

This pattern is achieved by placing tiles at right angles in a zigzag pattern, or with pre-assembled mosaic sheets. It’s very sophisticated and dynamic, ideal for creating visual accents. It requires extra cutting, which may increase costs and waste.

Where to use herringbone?
In traditional or transitional kitchens, especially with long, narrow tiles that create a visual focus.

Panama / Basket Weave

This type of layout transforms rectangular tiles into square units. It doesn’t require additional cutting and adds depth and visual interest to the space.

When to use basket weave?
When you want to add subtle energy to a modern decor.

Consider Highlighted Edges

Highlighted edges are not only visually appealing but also functional. When tiling an entire wall, ceiling height is usually not an exact multiple of the tile height, meaning some tiles will need to be cut. Including a slightly wider or narrower row of tiles helps avoid costly (and potentially unattractive) cuts and ensures the tiles fit the wall height perfectly.
